The days passed, and work and bills were still stressful.

Although Emma still walked on a bit of a cloud after her date with Carson, she found herself regretting not following his path. True, college would have put an enormous strain on her family, but if they’d survived those four years, she could have gotten a well-paying job somewhere. She could have supported her family better.

She could have given them opportunities they wouldn’t have had otherwise.

But, she told herself, the good Lord had a plan for all of them, and she just needed to trust in His will. Perhaps Carson was a part of His plan, or maybe Clara would give an opportunity. Maybe Emma would take life by the reins herself and find an entrepreneurial opportunity that, while not capable of scaling to billions of dollars, would still make life a lot more comfortable.

Yet, for all the stress that work and bills provided, there was a shining light at the end of the tunnel that kept her going through exhausting double shifts, tough conversations overheard between her parents, and uncertainty about the future.

Sunday.

Emma hadn’t seen or heard Carson since their, well, date the prior Tuesday, but she thought nothing of that. She was too busy to contemplate any meaning, and even if she wasn’t, he was spending time with his brothers and work. What was so complex and mysterious about that?

Actually, it made her more excited for Sunday. They’d have much more to talk about than if they saw each other every day.

And by the time Sunday rolled around, Emma was surprised at just how giddy she woke up.
